Subsea Cable Protection for Fiber-Optic Cables in Puerto Rico’s Coral Reefs

The Client

Our team successfully executed a critical subsea cable stabilization project off the coast of Puerto Rico. The project aimed to secure an active fiber-optic cable situated in a shallow, high-energy reef environment. The primary objective was to prevent mechanical failure of the subsea asset while actively protecting the delicate and protected local marine ecosystems.

The Challenges

Dynamic Loading: The cable was subject to severe scouring and lateral "swinging" motions due to constant storm swells and high wave energy, threatening its structural integrity.

Ecological Sensitivity: The cable’s uncontrolled movement was causing direct physical abrasion and damage to protected coral structures, including local Acropora colonies and other sensitive benthic habitats.

Non-Intrusive Requirement: As an active, live cable, the project required a solution that did not involve cutting, disconnecting, or causing any downtime to the data transmission.

The Solution

We deployed our Modular Split-Pipe Protection System to provide a robust, non-intrusive stabilization solution:

Rapid Installation: Utilizing our divisible (split-half) design, the protection pipes were snapped directly onto the existing subsea cable. This eliminated the need for complex cable handling or operational downtime.

Precision Anchoring: To counter the high-energy currents prevalent in the Puerto Rican coastal waters, we established specialized subsea fix points. Each unit was anchored to the seafloor bedrock using specialized subsea epoxy and corrosion-resistant fasteners, ensuring the cable remained firmly in place despite wave action.

The Outcomes

Enhanced Reliability: The stabilization successfully eliminated cable-on-seabed abrasion, significantly extending the service life of the subsea asset.

Eco-Friendly Performance: The installation immediately halted further damage to the seabed. By providing a stable, non-oxidizing substrate, the solution supports natural ecological recovery and helps preserve the coral environment.

Sustainable Engineering: This project demonstrates our commitment to "environmentally correct" subsea engineering in the Caribbean and beyond, providing a durable solution that minimizes long-term environmental footprints.
